India, South Africa face EU opposition

  • Eu set up that Proposal to limit export restrictions, increasing production better options
  • Text-based negotiations on India-South Africa’s proposal for a temporary waiver of intellectual property (IP) provisions for Covid-19 related vaccines and medical products have been kept on hold at WTO
  •   Eu has strong opposition against this and has indicated that its own suggestion of limiting export restrictions and supporting production is a better alternative to address supply concerns. 
  • TRIPS Council meeting, South Africa and India have a proposal.   
  • The joint proposal suggested a temporary waiver of some TRIPS obligations for the Covid-19 vaccine and other health products and technologies for the prevention, treatment, or containment of the virus for three years.
  • A large number of developing countries and LDCs. supported this but while developed countries such as the US, Australia, and New Zealand finally came on board this month and supported text-based negotiations on the issue
  •  EU did not mince words in opposing their proposal, saying that the broad waiver proposed by them was not the right response to the pandemic, and said would announce a more elaborate proposal soon.
